MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The source said that the drone had fallen near the city of Samarra in the Saladin province.

"The forces of the tribal militias were able to shoot down Daesh's drone that was flying from the city of Mosul," a source told local Al Mada newspaper.

Iraqi forces backed by Kurdish Peshmerga fighters are currently preparing an assault on Mosul. Daesh has controlled Iraq’s second largest city for the past two years. Last month, the United Nations warned that the military operation to retake the city could displace 3.4 million people and cause a humanitarian crisis.
