MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The minister added that the police should have been also better equipped.
"We need more police officers and not only those working on the streets, but also sitting at computers and serving in the special forces," de Maiziere said at a press conference with representatives from regional ministerial departments, as quoted by the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.
Earlier reports suggested that Germany planned to spend 2 billion euro ($2.2 billion) by 2020 to increase the number of police officers.
The German Interior Ministry proposed a set of new security measures in the wake of the two lone-wolf attacks in Germany's Bavaria in July, both claimed by Daesh terrorist group and the Munich stabbing carried out by a Syrian asylum seeker.
