US Federal Government Mobilized $16.7Mln for Louisiana Flood Emergency
23:50 GMT 19.08.2016 (Updated: 08:49 GMT 14.02.2023) The US federal government has already mobilized nearly $17 million in response to the devastating flooding in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a press release.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is working to provide emergency, temporary housing to the thousands of residents forced from their homes during flooding that hit Baton Rouge late last week.
18 August 2016, 22:14 GMT
“Over $16.7 million has already been approved for temporary housing, emergency repairs for disaster survivors,” DHS announced on Friday.
DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson and FEMA Deputy Administrator Joseph Nimmich traveled to Baton Rouge on Thursday to survey the response and recovery efforts and meet with local officials.
Local media has reported over 40,000 homes have been damaged by the historic flooding. On Sunday the federal government issued a major disaster declaration, freeing up resources to go to the impacted areas.
