MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, the Russian Defense Ministry welcomed a proposal brought forward by UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura for a 48-hour pause in fighting in Aleppo, and expressed readiness to implement next week the first 48-hour humanitarian pause to supply the city with aid as a "pilot project."
"MSF welcomes the support of the Russian government to the UN proposal of 48-hours periods of ceasefire in Aleppo. The population in Aleppo badly needs a respite in the combats and bombing that will allow aid into the city, and the evacuation of wounded and sick patients," MSF’s Pablo Marco said.
Humanitarian aid for the last month fails to reach many places in Syria where it is most needed amid ongoing violence in the country.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting a number of opposition factions and extremist groups.
