MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Barakyat, who has been living in Syria for 13 years, had her right leg and right hand amputated after her home was shelled in Aleppo, the head of the city hospital’s surgical department said Thursday. Her son was injured despite her efforts to protect the children, although his life is said to be not in danger.
"Irina Barakyat, who lost a leg and arm trying to protect children from the militant shelling in Syrian Aleppo, was transferred by military cargo aircraft to St. Petersburg," the statement read.
The injured, whose condition is evaluated as stable, will undergo a medical and psychological rehabilitation in the clinic of St. Petersburg's Military Medical Academy.
