The death of the world-famous Italian base jumper Uli Emanuele in Switzerland earlier this week prompted Sputnik to pay tribute to several distinguished extreme sports enthusiasts who fell victim to their thirst for new thrills.

On August 18, Emanuele died after he leapt from a mountain top in the Swiss Alps; he lost control and crashed into rocks before he could open his parachute.

The 29-year-old tried to repeat an incredible trick that made international headlines earlier this year, when he managed to pass through a mountain hole just two and a half meters wide at a speed of about 170 kilometers per hour in his wingsuit.

His death was only the latest in a series of tragic accidents involving eminent extreme sports dare-devils.

Dan Osman of the United States, one of the most famous rock climbers in history, made a name for himself speedily ascending through difficult routes.

He had more than once tackled those routes without using protective gear, which, however, finally prompted Osman to deliberately jump off a cliff using a dynamic rope. It was something that subsequently added to the popularization of so-called rope jumping.

35-year-old Osman, who worked as a part-time carpenter, died on November 23, 1998, when he made his regular leap in Yosemite National Park, but failed to calculate the load and crashed.

In 2015, this park witnessed another tragedy involving a prominent extreme sports enthusiast, Dean Potter. He died when he jumped from a height of 2,300 meters and failed to open his parachute.

"Part of me thinks that it is mad to believe that a man can fly, while another part feels that we all have a dream to fly. So why don't we strive for it?"- he told the New York Times in 2008.

American base jumper Eric Roner became another victim of an unopened parachute in September 2015, when he died during a skydive dedicated to the opening ceremony of a golf event in California. Earlier, the 39-year-old made global headlines when he managed to perform an umbrella skydive in what was apparently inspired by the movie Mary Poppins.

In January 2016, famous French tightrope walker Tancred Mele, founder of an acrobatic group, the Flying Frenchies, died while practicing a complex stunt in southeastern France.

The tragedy occurred when acrobats were working on a new trick a balloon when it suddenly broke free and quickly ascended. The 32-year-old Mele fell from a 30-meter height.

On February 1, 2016, iconic freeride mountain bike rider Kelly McGarry died in his native New Zealand, when out on a ride on the Fernhill Loop above Queenstown.

After descending along the road, which not everyone dares to traverse on their feet, McGarry passed away because of what doctors said was a cardiac arrest. He was only 33.

Base jumping, which involves skydiving from fixed objects rather than planes, is perhaps the world's most dangerous sport; according to the UK Telegraph, there is one fatality per 60 participants.
