New Delhi (Sputnik) – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's suit which had his name "Narendra Damodardas Modi" monogrammed in it has found a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the most expensive suit ever sold when it fetched over $600,000 in an auction held in February this year. It was bought by Laljibhai Patel, a diamond merchant from Modi's home state Gujarat. Patel donated the amount to Modi's pet project 'Namami Gange' - a special drive to clean the holy river Ganga.

#ModiSuit has been trending on social media ever since news about the suit entering the Guinness Book of World Records broke.

Narendra Modi wore the suit during his meeting with visiting US President Barack Obama last year. Modi came under severe criticism at the time, as it was seen as unbecoming of the Prime Minister to have exhibited such flamboyancy at a time when the country's farmers were facing a terrible agrarian crisis, driving many of them to take their own lives. It triggered a massive backlash for the government with the Opposition taunting the government as "suit-boot ki sarkar" symbolically meaning "government for billionaires."
