The showdown will involve thousands of athletes from around the world who are expected to parade across the legendary sports arena.

At the end of the ceremony, the Olympic flag will be handed over to Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. The Japanese capital is due to host the next edition of the Summer Games in 2020.
