"Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the Florida Department of Health (DOH) will allocate $5 million in additional state funding to Miami-Dade County for Zika preparedness and mosquito control," the release stated on Monday.
Last week Scott announced the discovery of a second area in Miami-Dade County where individuals had contracted the Zika virus from local mosquitos.
Scott added, "DOH has been fulfilling requests for Miami-Dade County since June, and if it becomes clear that more resources are needed, we will not hesitate."
Florida is the only US state with Zika cases linked to local mosquitos, and a total of 36 cases have been identified so far.
The current Zika outbreak began in Brazil in the spring of 2015. The virus is transmitted by daytime-active mosquitos and does not cause serious complications in healthy adults. However, the virus can cause severe brain defects and microcephaly in newborns.
