UK officers from the Met Police Counter Terrorism Command arrested a 20-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts, namely traveling to Syria to join a proscribed organization, according to official statement.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A woman and a girl, suspected of trying to travel to Syria to join a proscribed organization, were arrested in London on Monday, the Metropolitan Police Service (Met) said.

"Officers from the Met Police Counter Terrorism Command arrested a 20-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts, namely traveling to Syria to join a proscribed organization," the statement reads.

The suspects were arrested at about 9 p.m. (20:00 GMT) local time on Sunday, the suspects were taken taken into custody at a central London police station, the statement added.

The British Security Service MI5 says the level of terrorist threat to Britain security is severe. In 2015, the number of arrests linked to terrorism hit the record level of 339, according to UK police. In March, police officer Mark Rowley warned there was evidence militants from Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, banned in numerous countries, including Russia, were attempting to "build bigger attacks" in the country.
