MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — Peruvian Interior Ministry on Tuesday confirmed there are indications pointing to the existence of a police death squad conducting unlawful and extrajudicial killings, Deputy Interior Minister Ruben Vargas said.
"There are serious indications of the existence of an illegal group formed of police officers that could have staged clashes and executed people," Vargas was quoted as saying by the TeleSUR TV-channel.
In early August, the Peruvian La Prensa news website reported that at least 96 police officers were suspected of involvement in extrajudicial killings of 27 suspected criminals.
According to Vargas, the killings took place in at least six police operations in the capital, Lima and in the northern town of Chiclayo.
