Its is difficult to judge whether a chemical attack in the Damascus suburb of Ghouta in August 2013 had been a part of any plot, including the one blamed on French intelligence agencies by the Syrian government, Thierry Mariani, a member of French parliament’s foreign affairs committee, told Sputnik on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, a probe to uncover those responsible for deadly chemical attacks in Syria became a vocal point at the UN Security Council meeting.

The Syrian ambassador to the United Nations Bashar Jaafari claimed that the sarin gas attack that killed hundreds of people in Ghouta was a plot organized by French intelligence services to prevent UN weapons inspectors from going to Aleppo area for a probe into another chemical attack and put the blame for it on the Syrian army.

"It is difficult to say anything about these accusations. It is very difficult to find out who was responsible for the attack. Of course the Syrian army had a possibility to organize the gas attack but terrorists or Daesh [Islamic State] had the same possibility," Mariani said.

Franсois Delattre, France’s representative to the Security Council, described the allegations by the Syrian government as "absurd" following the UN Security meeting.
