An initial assessment by the Indian Navy confirmed that the leak was very serious.

Indian officials are scrambling to find out how widespread the leak was and who was in possession of top secret defense information concerning their newest Scorpene submarines in development by French company DCNS.

"The available information is being examined at Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defense (Navy) and an analysis is being carried out by concerned specialists. It appears that the source of leak is from overseas and not in India," the Indian Navy released in a statement.

The alleged leak took place in 2011 through a retired French navy captain who was on contract with DCNS.

"I have asked the Navy Chief to look into the matter… What I understand is there has been a hacking, the first important thing is to identify if it is related to us."

Sea trials of the first six Scorpene submarines began in May and are set to be inducted into the Indian Navy in October this year.
