Plymouth Council's official website is newplymouthnz.com, and pressing enter once you've typed the address in your search engine will take you to no other place. However, a similar domain main, but with a different suffix — the few letters that come after the full stop — won't bring you local news and upcoming events. Instead, it will take you straight to the homepage of a well-known pornographic website.
"It's easy to confuse that URL with our official one of newplymouthnz.com so we're trying to get ownership of it and get that redirection removed" a council representative said.
The council is said to have laid an official complaint with the Domain Names Commission regarding the URL and the Department of Internal Affairs regarding the content of the website.
And as much as we recognize the serious concerns that arise from younger, innocent minds stumbling onto adult sites like this — it certainly isn't an isolated case for a common issue online that we've termed officially as UDNS, or Unfortunate Domain Name Syndrome.
