India Looks for Alternative to Pellet Gun to Quell Protests in Kashmir

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that the government will look into alternatives to pellet guns and also keep the door open to separatists for talks.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh during a joint  press conference with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Muft said that, “A committee set up to look into alternatives to pellets guns will submit its report soon. We feel the need to have an alternative. We have asked the forces to exercise maximum restraint and they are doing that.

The Indian government is under immense pressure to find an alternative to pellet guns in the wake of widespread criticism of the crowd-control device that has left thousands of people in the Kashmir valley blind.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh sought people’s cooperation to bring peace and stability in Kashmir which has been in turmoil for over a month.

“I am ready to talk to those who believe in humanity, democracy and think for the betterment of Kashmir,” Rajnath Singh said during the joint press conference in Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir.

Rajnath Singh said that the government has proper understanding of the situation and will address the Kashmir problem accordingly.
The government will establish a mechanism to solve the grievances of the Kashmiri peoples living in other states of India.

“The Center will set up an agency for Kashmiris living outside the state. In the event of any problem, they can contact it. I have appealed to the people to treat Kashmiris like their brethren and instill confidence among Kashmiri students,” Rajnath Singh said.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh was in Kashmir on a two-day visit to find a solution to the unrest which has been continuing for the past 48 days.
