MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The death toll from the devastating earthquake in central Italy has gone up to 247, The Telegraph reports citing the country’s civil protection agency.
"Search activities continued throughout the night and still continue. The tragic death toll, announced by the Prefecture of Rieti and Ascoli Piceno has worsened: 190 were killed in the Rieti province, 57 in the province of Ascoli Piceno," the civil protection said in a Thursday statement.
On Wednesday, civil protection officials said that at least 159 people were killed by the earthquake — 106 in the central Rieti province and another 53 in the Ascoli Piceno province in the Marche region.
On Wednesday, a 6.0-magnitude quake shook the central Italian Umbria region, causing damage across numerous towns and resulting in the death of over 100 people, according to Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. The earthquake was followed by multiple aftershocks.
