PRAGUE (Sputnik) — The Nord Stream 2 project aims to deliver 55 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas a year to the European Union across the Baltic Sea to Germany, bypassing Ukraine, and subsequently, Slovakia. The gas pipeline project plans to use the original Nord Stream pipeline for 86-percent of the route before branching off.

"If Nord Stream 2 is created, I wonder how the current [Slovakia's gas transportation] capacity will be used," Fico told the local Pravda newspaper, commenting on his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.

He added that the Nord Stream 2 was the key issue discussed at the recent negotiations, as the implementation of the project could deprive Slovakia of an estimated 800 million euros (some $900 million) per year in gas transit revenue.
