MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the situation in Syria in a telephone conversation on Friday, the Kremlin said.
"A phone call of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan took place by initiative of the Turkish side… The leaders exchanged opinions comprehensively on the situation in Syria. The importance of joint efforts in fighting terrorism was noted," the statement read.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups.
The presidents also discussed the issues of further development of Turkish-Russian cooperation in political, trade and economic sectors.
