MOSCOW, August 28 (Sputnik) – According to the Update Philippines news website, a group of 50 armed men attacked the jail on Saturday night.
Despite the fact that there were no casualties, the attackers succeeded to disarm guards and capture firearms, including M16 and M14 rifles, the media outlet reported.
Local police announced that the armed group brought with them eight militants from the "Maute group," which is affiliated with the Islamic state terrorist group, which is outlawed in many countries, including Russia, the website added.
The Philippine government is mired in a decades-long standoff with insurgents from different Islamist groups.
