MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Turkish coup plotters remaining on the run may carry out political assassinations, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said on Monday.
"There are still some army members on the loose, police officers who were previously released or on the run. When you put together some developments, I think that they would not step aside just because they were defeated after a coup attempt that they had prepared for so long. They may want to carry out some attacks either by themselves or through any terrorist organization. Yes, there is such a possibility," Kurtulmus told reporters, as quoted by the Hurriyet Daily newspaper.
On July 15, an attempted coup took place in Turkey and was suppressed the following day. Ankara has accused US-based Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen and his followers designated as FETO of playing a key role in the failed coup, a charge Gulen has denied.
