The new invention is specifically designed to provide protection for civilians from shrapnel, shards of glass and concrete flung by explosions, according to a press release issued by the institute.
The blanket is a piece of anti-ballistic fabric 2 meters long and 1 meter wide, which weighs about 7.9 kilograms. It can be stored in a compact bag and quickly be unfolded into a sizeable protective screen that can then be used to cover a window or to cover yourself and your family members. The blanket is capable of protecting a person or persons from shrapnel travelling at a speed of up to 500 meters per second.
The Scientific Research Institute of Steel, a subsidiary of the Concern Tractor Plants, develops and manufactures complex protection system for both personnel and vehicles. It produces the vast majority of ballistic armor, protective helmets, shields and dynamic protection systems for light and heavy armored vehicles in Russia.
