"It is a model of how potentially dangerous disputes can be resolved in a mature and peaceful manner including the South China Sea where the US urges China and the Philippines to respect the judgment of the International tribunal which is final and legally binding on both parties," Kerry said, as quoted by NDTV broadcaster, as he met with students in New Delhi.
China has territorial claims to a number of islands in the South China Sea, notably to the Spratly Islands, known as Nansha Islands in China, which are believed to be rich in oil and gas reserves and contested by the Philippines.
On July 12, the Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled that China has no legal basis to claim historic rights to South China Sea resources and has violated the sovereign rights of the Philippines in the country's exclusive economic zone.
