MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The UK Labour Party should be more clear about its pro-immigration stance, party leadership hopeful Owen Smith said Wednesday.
"I think Labour, which is the party that always has to speak to the best of people's value and always has to speak for decency in Britain and tolerance and diversity, needs to be much more straightforward about our views on immigration," Smith told The Independent newspaper.
According to Smith, the party should not mask its pro-immigration attitudes for fear of losing votes to its rivals.
"I think even if there was some electoral damage, we should be clear about it," Smith said.
Smith is running for the position of Labour leader against incumbent Jeremy Corbyn, who refused to step down after a no-confidence vote following the Brexit referendum.
The election is due to end on September 21. The result of the voting is expected to be announced at a Leadership Conference in Liverpool on September 24.
