Brexit is unlikely to be reversed but the ongoing debates on the issue mean that it is possible for the United Kingdom to stay within the European Union, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The former prime minister added that triggering Article 50 to start the process of leaving the bloc could potentially take months or even years.

"I think that it [staying in the bloc] is possible," Blair told Europe 1 radio in an interview, adding that British people had the right to change their minds.

Blair dismissed the Brexit vote as he believes it was guided by discontent with the effects of globalization and migration, among other factors.

On June 23, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support the so-called Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.
