WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Local press reports said the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) had planned to auction of 36 sites near the New Mexico city of Roswell, where the Thursday’s protests took place.
"Across the country, people are demanding protection of our land, water, and climate by keeping fossil fuels in the ground," said Rebecca Sobel," WildEarth Guardians’ Senior Climate and Energy Campaigner Rebecca Sobel said in the release.
BLM typically holds oil and gas lease auctions quarterly, in which bidders must be physically present. As a result, auctions typically draw environmental protestors.
