Bill Clinton's staff used the funding program for former presidents, dubbed the Former President's Act, to finance the Clinton Foundation and then-US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's private email server, media reported, citing data obtained through a freedom of information request.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Clinton requested over $16 million in 2001-2016 under the act, more than any other living former president, the Politico investigation claimed Thursday based on records obtained from the General Services Administration (GSA).

Federal money was used to purchase IT equipment for both the Foundation and the then secretary of State's use, including servers. The investigation revealed nothing illegal but it showed how the Clinton family managed to blur the lines between their foundation and the US Department of State.

For example, 13 out of the 22 staff members, who were subsidized under the act, worked for Bill Clinton's personal office and the Clinton Foundation simultaneously. Not only were Clinton's staff paid about $10,000 per year through federal grants, the former president also reportedly hired 10 employees when George H. W. Bush has just four people on his federally-funded staff.

According to the media outlet, a Clinton aide denied any wrong-doing, saying Bill Clinton "wears several hats — among them being former president of the United States and the founder of the Clinton Foundation. His staffing reflects those roles… There is no legal prohibition that would preclude the former president’s staff from receiving compensation from other sources or doing personal work for the former presidents. We are unaware of any legal prohibition that would preclude these activities.”

Finally, GSA officials failed to determine whether the IT equipment purchased under the act was intended for Clinton's personal office or the Foundation.

The Clinton Foundation was established by Bill Clinton in 2001 after the end of his presidency as a nonprofit organization to raise funds to provide grants and carry out charitable projects. The funds raised by the Foundation are estimated at $2 billion.
