HANGZHOU (Sputnik) — China's President Xi Jinping hopes the G20 summit in Hangzhou will create a new economic growth momentum, he said at the official opening ceremony of the summit in Hangzhou on Sunday.
"I hope this summit will provide solutions that address reasons and causes of the economic problems and help to achieve sustainable and balanced inclusive global growth," Xi said.
He added that the leaders of the G20 countries should actively contribute to strengthening macroeconomic cooperation.
"We should pursue more comprehensive macroeconomic policies," he said. "We should make the G20 an action team instead of a 'talk shop.'"
The Group of 20 should focus on efforts to boost trade and facilitate investments, Xi said.
"We should construct open global economy and continue to contribute to simplification and liberalization of trade and investments. The Group of 20 should fulfill its commitments on abandoning the introduction of new protectionist measures, to take decisive measures aimed at promotion of trade."
The G20 summit in eastern China will run from Sunday through Monday. This year's theme is "Towards an Innovative, Invigorated, Interconnected and Inclusive World Economy." The event brought together leaders of 19 G20 member states, the leadership of the European Union, as well as the heads of other states, such as Egypt and Kazakhstan.
The G20 summit is taking place in the Chinese city of Hangzhou on September 4-5.
