MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The EU law enforcement agency Europol processed over 1,600 media accounts containing terrorist and extremist propaganda in a 48-hour operation, the agency said in a statement Monday.
"1 677 media content and social media accounts in 6 languages containing terrorist and violent extremist propaganda have been processed for the purpose of referral. The content was hosted by 35 social media and online service providers," Europol's statement reads.
According to the statement, Europol's Internet Referral Unit (EU IRU) backed by UK, French, German and Slovenian law enforcement agencies referred offending material to the online service providers concerned, who are in charge of removing such content.
The EU IRU was established in July 2015 to eliminate Internet content of an extremist or terrorist nature.
