RIGA (Sputnik) — Latvian Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis vowed on Tuesday to reduce the number of civil servants in the near future.
"Significant changes in the public administration were outlined, including a staff reduction," Kucinskis told journalists.
By reducing the number of public administration employees, it will be possible to increase the salaries paid to department heads, which is hoped will improve the efficiency of public institutions.
The prime minister added that during the 2008 economic crisis, revisions were made to the public administration, however, they did not go far enough.
On January 13, Kucinskis was nominated to the post of Latvia's prime minister by the country's president. In February, the Latvian parliament formally approved the new government.
