Over 90,000 People Displaced Form Iraq's North Since Mid-June
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced on Tuesday that it was able to deliver desperately needed food supplies for more than 30,000 people in and around the Northern Iraqi town of Qayyarah, located 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Mosul, the town that was under siege for more than two years.

“The people of Qayyarah had been living under siege for two years and are suffering extreme hunger with scarce access to food supplies. Reaching them with life-saving food assistance is a very positive step forward, Thanks to a generous contribution from the Government of Germany; WFP is able to provide more food assistance to families who are being displaced from the greater Mosul area,” said Sally Haydock, WFP Iraq Country Director as quoted on the organization's website.

WFP said that the food delivered to Qayyara will provide enough food for more than 30,000 people for a full month.

The Daesh terrorist group controls large areas of Iraq, in which it claims to have established an Islamic caliphate. The group is notorious for its brutality and human rights violations, including summary executions of captured opponents and journalists. The group is outlawed in Russia, the United States and many other countries.

According to the UN, nearly 10 million people in Iraq now require some sort of humanitarian assistance.
