As part of President Barack Obama’s plan to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, a 100-cell prison at the complex has been closed.

The cells comprised what is known as Camp 5, and will be retrofitted into a clinic and psychiatric ward for the prisoners that still remain in other parts of the facility.

"We’re now down to 61 detainees and we have consolidated our detainee population from Camp 5 into Camp 6," Navy capt. John Filostrat said, according to the Hill.

"The rest are in Camp 7 and in the coming months we’ll reduce by three Military Police companies and about a dozen medical personnel."

The Cuban island detention center was established in 2002 for the interrogation and prosecution of war criminals, under former US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Since that time the prison has become notorious for detaining people without trial and for the use of torture.
