MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The potential success of the Russia-US negotiations on Syria conflict resolution may expedite the resumption of the intra-Syrian talks, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said Wednesday.
"The fact that contacts are underway between Russia and the United State, and the possibility of these contacts resulting in a positive outcome, would of course largely contribute to the acceleration of [UN Envoy for Syria Staffan] de Mistura’s decision to convene the next rounds [of intra-Syrian talks]. I believe that after these events it will be more possible to talk about the dates [of the next round of talks]," he said, adding that "de Mistura has not specified a time frame so far."According to the diplomat, Russia hopes that the next round will take place "in the near future', Gatilov told reporters.
He also reminded that a number of international contacts on Syria are set to be held during the UN General Assembly in New York later this month, including Russia-US contacts at the UN Security Council session on September 21.
