MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The earthquake struck at 21:46 GMT on Thursday, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), about 29 kilometers (18 miles) southwest of Macquarie, USGS said.
No tsunami warnings were issued and there were no immediate reports of casualties or damages.
According to the Richter scale, earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.0-6.9 are considered strong and can cause moderate damage to even earthquake-resistant structures.
The Macquarie Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
