"We are for, you know, like in the same situation with the Iranian nuclear program, with the chemical demilitarization in Syria, for very creative approaches being used by all the players, including the United States and Russia," Lavrov told reporters at a joint press conference with US Secretary of State John Kerry.
The Russian foreign minister stressed that steps that could escalate tensions on the Korean peninsula should be avoided.
"The current situation shows that, probably, diplomats should be a little more creative than just reacting with sanctions, sanctions and more sanctions to any escalation of the situation," Lavrov said, adding that ways could be found to resume the six-party talks.
John Kerry said during the press conference that the United States would negotiate with North Korea immediately if Kim Jong Un would declare readiness to abandon nuclearization.
"Our hope is ultimately we can get back to the talks," Kerry stated on Friday. "We’re prepared to go back right away, all Kim Jong Um has to do is say I’m prepared to talk about denuclearization."
Pyongyang confirmed on Friday that it had carried out a nuclear test, at its northeastern nuclear test site. The nuclear experiment is believed to be the fifth and largest since Pyongyang started pursuing nuclear and ballistic missile programs, drawing condemnation from the international community.
