GENEVA (Sputnik) – A ministerial meeting on Syria scheduled for September 21 is a target date to ensure all actors in the Syrian political process are involved in making headway toward the crisis settlement, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura told Sputnik on Friday.
"September 21st will be an important date. The window of opportunity is quickly coming to a close. It is high time to cease the opportunity and make another push to the political process in Syria. So that is the target date for making sure that everyone is actively involved in producing some positive outcome on this conflict," de Mistura said.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups, such as Daesh and Jabhat Fatah Al Sham (previously known as al-Nusra Front), which are prohibited in many countries, including Russia.
