The UN Security Council should immediately take action against North Korea after Pyongyang conducted another nuclear test on Friday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a press conference.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Ban condemned Pyongyang's underground nuclear test as a dangerous escalation.

"I count on the [UN] Security Council to remain united and take appropriate action," Ban stated on Friday. "We must immediately break this accelerating spiral of escalation."

According to Ban Ki-moon, North Korea should begin the denuclearization process instead of conducting further nuclear tests

"I reiterate the united call of the international community on the leadership of the DPRK [North Korea] to reverse its course and commit to the path of denuclearization," Ban stated.

Ban addressed reporters following Pyongyang’s confirmation on Friday that it conducted a nuclear test overnight at its northeastern test site.

The UN chief condemned the test as a dangerous escalation.

The nuclear experiment is believed to be the fifth and largest since Pyongyang started pursuing nuclear and ballistic missile programs, drawing condemnation from the international community.
