TASHKENT (Sputnik) – The vote comes after the death of long-time Uzbek leader Islam Karimov, who died last week at the age of 78. Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyoyev was named acting president until the next elections.
"In accordance with the Central Election Commission’s decision and the corresponding articles of the Constitution and the law on presidential elections of the Republic of Uzbekistan, set December 4 as the day of the presidential elections," Mirza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov told reporters.
Abdusalomov said the election campaign kicks off on September 9.
