"I do not think putting American ground troops in Syria to hold territory, to become occupiers, to try to govern people is an all the right strategy. I support special forces… trainers. I want to intensify our air campaign, I do not think it is regularized enough. I want to do everything we can on intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance support," Clinton told CNN television broadcaster in an interview on Sunday.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups, such as Daesh and Jabhat Fatah Al Sham (previously known as Nusra Front), which are prohibited in many countries, including Russia.
The US-led coalition of more than 60 countries has been conducting anti-terrorist airstrikes in Syria and Iraq since 2014.
