MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A nuclear-powered US aircraft carrier will join naval drills that South Korea plans to stage in mid-October, in what Korean media said will be a show of strength to warn off the North.
"The USS Ronald Reagan will take part in the combined maritime exercise between the US and South Korean militaries to be carried out in the western and southern seas," a Korean military official told Yonhap.
The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier will be deployed to the Yellow and South seas on October 10-15. It is part of a US Japan-based strike group and the only forward-deployed aircraft carrier in the region.
The US and South Korean militaries will reportedly focus on joint attack drills on the North's leadership and military assets after Pyongyang confirmed having tested a nuclear technology for the second time this year.
