MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the office's official website, the President has appointed Ligi as a foreign minister, at the same time relieving him of his duties as a minister of education and science.
President Ilves discharged the incumbent Foreign Minister Marina Kaljurand following her decision to resign and run for presidency. The Board of Estonia's Reform Party earlier on Monday had chosen Ligi as a candidate for the position of a new Foreign Minister.
The swearing-in ceremony in parliament will be held on Tuesday, after which the new minister will officially take up his post.
Jurgen Ligi was born on July 16, 1959 in Tartu. His professional career includes positions of defense minister and finance minister in Andrus Ansip's cabinets and finance minister and education and research minister in Taavi Roivas' cabinets.
