MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida stressed the importance of implementing the UN Security Council nuclear safety resolutions, following their phone discussion of North Korea's recent nuclear tests, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported on Monday.

"The two ministers discussed the nuclear test carried out by North Korea in breach of the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council as well as importance of political and diplomatic missions to regulate this situation within the context of lowering military and political tensions in Northwestern Asia," the Russian Foreign Ministry's statement said.

North Korea confirmed having completed a successful nuclear test on September 9.
