WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — "The Department of Defense has confirmed that the U.S. precision airstrike on Aug. 30 targeting senior ISIL [Islamic State] leader Abu Muhammad Al-Adnani was successful," Cook stated on Monday.
On August 31, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed Russia’s Su-34 fighter-bombers killed up to 40 Islamic State militants in the southern ranges of Aleppo on Tuesday, including Adnani.
The US Defense Department argued, however, that an US precision airstrike targeted the terrorists’ leader. The Pentagon claimed it had no information on whether Russia had targeted a second-in-command of the Islamic State.
The Islamic State, also known as Daesh in Arabic, has been designated as a terrorist organization and is outlawed in Russia as well as in numerous other countries around the world.
