MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The vote was passed late Monday by 450 to 10 with nine abstentions, the Chamber said in a publication. Cuhna has been barred from being reelected until 2026.
The 57-year-old, who has been an ally of incumbent President Michel Temer, accused the parliament of attacking him for his role in the impeachment process of ex-President Dilma Rousseff.
"Does anyone have any doubt that if I hadn’t acted there would have been no impeachment? I am paying the price for giving continuity to the process," he was quoted as saying.
A huge corruption scheme was uncovered in Brazil’s state-run energy company Petrobras in in 2014, triggering a large-scale inquiry and discontent with President Rousseff who headed the company in 2003-2010.
