MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Counterterrorism efforts in the Israeli-controlled Syrian Golan Heights should be conducted with adherence to UN Security Council resolutions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday.
"There are terrorists universally recognized as enemies of mankind in the Golan Heights. But, of course, dealing with them including through airstrikes should remain within the UN Security Council resolutions dedicated to the Golan Heights and with general restraint, avoiding any provocations," Lavrov said.
The Golan Heights, internationally recognized as Syrian territory, was seized by Israel during the Six-Day War in 1967. In 1981, the Israeli parliament voted to annex two-thirds of the region. The United Nations has repeatedly stated that Israel’s occupation of the Golan Heights is illegal, calling for it to be returned to Syria.
