UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Following the meeting, Security Council members will meet for closed consultations to discuss Libya sanctions, United Nations Support Mission in Libya and other matters, the Security Council schedule revealed.
After the consultations, Special Representative and head of the UN Support Mission in Libya Martin Kobler will hold a press stake-out following his briefing to the Security Council.
Libya has been in a state of turmoil since 2011 when long-standing leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown by Western-supported Islamic extremists after several months of unrest.
On March 31, 2016, the efforts by the international community to end the Libya crisis led to the establishment of a UN-backed unity government — Government of National Accord (GNA).
The GNA, however, has been struggling to assert its authority. Recently, the Libyan National Army launched a surprised attack and took full control of Libya’s oil crescent.
