WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Air Force has ordered more than two-thirds of a billion dollars-worth of new bombs from Boeing to be delivered over the next half decade, the US Department of Defense announced.
"The Boeing Company — Defense, Space and Security [of] St. Louis, Missouri, has been awarded a $700 million… contract for Small Diameter Bomb Increment 1," the announcement stated on Tuesday.
Work on the contract will be performed in St. Louis in the US state of Missouri, will involve foreign military sales and is expected to be completed by December 12, 2021, the Defense Department said.
The Small Diameter Bomb system has a range greater than 60 nautical miles with precision guidance, according to a Boeing.
The system is carried on F-15E combat aircraft and can be integrated in the bays of the F-22A, F-35, unmanned drones as well as B-1 and B-2 bombers.
