EU Border Agency Plans 'Stress Test' as Italy Sees Surge of Migrants
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The European Union is "betraying" its historic values, showing lack of solidarity amid the ongoing refugee crisis, especially in respect to unaccompanied migrant children, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said Wednesday.

"When it comes to managing refugee crisis we have started to see solidarity. I am convinced much more solidarity is needed, I also know that the solidarity must be voluntary… I am asking as long and immediate action both from Greece and the European Union to protect what we call in French 'les enfants non accompagnés.' We want protection of these children, the European Union is betraying its historic values," Juncker said in the annual State of the Union speech.

Europe has been beset by a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing crisis-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa to escape violence and poverty. The majority of refugees cross the Mediterranean Sea and enter the European Union in Greece and Italy.

Greece registered over 3,300 unaccompanied asylum-seeking and migrant children arriving on its lands in the first seven months of 2016. The report urged the Greek government to ensure that there are sufficient and suitable alternatives to detention for unaccompanied children and if detention was inevitable, it should be for short periods and in a way that complies with international law.
