"Forces loyal to the Presidency Council made impressive progress to oust Daesh from its last remaining stronghold in Libya, in Sirte. Very soon, Daesh will no longer hold territory in Libya," Martin Kobler told the UN Security Council.
The government’s forces launched a ground offensive in May to retake the city from Daesh militants and have made considerable process, freeing most of Sirte more than a year after it was captured.
Kobler thanked the United States for its air support in destroying numerous car bombs before they reached their targets. "The fight against Daesh is a Libyan-led fight, but the defeat of Daesh in Libya benefits the entire region," he stressed.
The Daesh group gained a foothold in Libya in the turmoil following the 2011 ousting of the country’s long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi.
