WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The deal for German pharmaceutical giant Bayer to acquire US agricultural company Monsanto is a threat to the United States, US Senator Bernie Sanders said in a statement on Wednesday.
"The attempted takeover of Monsanto by Bayer is a threat to all Americans," the former presidential candidate stated. "These mergers boost the profits of huge corporations and leave Americans paying even higher prices."
Sanders wrote that regulators should block the merger, and he urged the US Department of Justice to reopen an investigation into Monsanto’s possibly monopolistic practices in the seed and chemical market.
Bayer and Monsanto have reached a deal worth about $66 billion that has been approved by each company’s board of directors.
