Right to Fair Trial Must be Respected in Turkey After Coup Attempt
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States and other countries need to condemn the purge of opposition and independent media in Turkey that has occurred since the attempted military coup on July 15, Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) Europe and Central Asia Program Coordinator Nina Ognianova said in a testimony to the US Congress.

"While it is important to condemn the coup attempt of July 15, we strongly urge Turkey's international partners, specifically the United States, to condemn the continuing purge of opposition and independent media that has followed the attempted coup," Ognianova testified on Wednesday to a subcommittee of the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee.

Ognianova also urged the United States and other countries not to honor any arrest warrants issued by Turkey for journalists.

Since the July coup attempt, Turkish authorities have arrested more than 100 journalists, closed 100 media outlets, censored at least 30 news websites and taken credentials away from 600 members of the press, the CPJ noted.
